TODD MCFARLANE COMIC VBOOK GREATS SERIES

Here is the FIRST EVER episode of ‘The Comic Greats’ (broken into four videos)… the ONE episode that kicked off our lifelong friendship. Released: 1991 Created by: Stan Lee Directed by: Rick Stawinski Music by: Rick Stawinski, Rob Stawinski Cast: Stan Lee (host), Todd McFarlane, Rob Liefeld Excelsior Productions, Stabur Home Video, 26 Minutes Review: Revisiting this video series from my childhood has been a lot of fun. ASM boasted a lot of great talent over the years, but few of them had the impact Todd McFarlane had on the comic industry.McFarlanes art on ASM set the comic industry on fire and made him into a superstar. I’ve even been able to join him at some of the most important events in his life like doing a speech at his Hollywood Walk of Fame Star celebration! This past weekend at his event, Comikaze, we were doing a panel….and one of the last questions was ‘Stan, who’s your favorite superhero?’ Stan doesn’t even take too much time to think about his answer and says, ‘In order to make a lifelong friend, SPAWN is my favorite superhero!’ I could barely believe my ears! His kindness and humility inspired then and even more now! He hasn’t changed since I’ve known him which, I think, is his MOST admirable trait.Īnyway, back to ‘The Comic Greats’ show… I ended up doing a few more tapings of the show with Stan which cemented our friendship that has lasted DECADES. Really quick, just to PROVE how kind he is, let me tell you this quick story. Whether I was 16, 35 or now…Stan is STILL the humble charming guy we all know and love…

Then, when I became a professional comic book artist I had even MORE run-ins with him BUT it wasn’t until I taped that first ‘The Comic Greats’ show that really kicked off our friendship. He LOVES comics, he loves what he does but above all he just likes people!īack when I was a teenager I had a few run-ins with Stan at conventions (you can see a video with original footage of my first run in with Stan by CLICKING HERE). If Stan wasn’t famous he’d STILL love hanging out and talking with people. It debuted in 1991 and yours truly got to be the FIRST guest on the show! It was a pretty COOL time.Īt the time of the show, Stan wasn’t yet “Stan the Man” like we know him today… BUT he was a PEOPLE PERSON back then…and he’s STILL a people person TODAY. Once people tire of that one form factor, you have to come up with another option, they haven't come up with another option.Back in the 90’s there was this GREAT show called ‘The Comic Greats’ with Stan Lee. McFarlane summed it up as the company relying heavily on “one form factor.and put all their eggs in a basket. The Walmart buyer’s saying ‘give me value,’” he added.įunko ( FNKO) has been a big beneficiary of geek culture, but has been struggling even before the COVID-19 crisis. “So I'm going to give them a value pack, which is what they're looking for right now. You give them plastic, lots of it, you give them a great price, and you put a brand name on it, that's a home run, that's a Grand Slam,” he told Yahoo Finance. “Why? Because any CEO for a public company is listening for toys. Among other things, McFarlane has created a generic line of toys. McFarlane Toys just signed a deal with Walmart to roll out a line of exclusive collectibles, and that deal has shown the CEO what retailers are looking for in a product. And they're spending it on the geek level.” Home / Series / The Comic Book Greats / Aired Order / Season 1 When available, episode names will be translated into your preferred language. “So there might not be going into the store, but they still have the money in their pocket. “They're ordering 300% higher and the velocity of the sell through is coming in about 400% faster,” McFarlane added. “Instead of spending $40 they'll spend $80 through the internet,” on McFarlane Toys, which is showing up via Target ( TGT) and Walmart ( WMT). “They're spending more under guilty pleasures,” said the artist-turned-entrepreneur. He believes that cancelled comic book conventions mean would-be attendees have extra money to spend since they’re not traveling to major events - or even going out all that much. Yet Todd McFarlane, CEO of McFarlane Toys and creator of the comic book character Spawn, told Yahoo Finance that there is some good news in a beleaguered market.

And it hasn’t been fun and games for the toy industry for some time, with Hasbro ( HAS) and Mattel ( MAT) under pressure since well before the pandemic. Shockwaves stemming from the COVID-19 pandemic have reverberated across industries, with retail companies particularly hard-hit. The coronavirus crisis has led to a bloodletting in retail, but one celebrated comic book entrepreneur believes there’s still life in geek culture, as some consumers divert money they would have used for convention travel into collectibles and toys.
